MLitt Masters, Contemporary Art Practice, Glasgow School of Art 2026

Yes, this is where last year’s decision to enrol at Glasgow School of Art’s portfolio preparation course, has led me.

Wow.  Life is just marvellous.

One short year ago I could not have imagined myself in this position.  But then I had a conversation with the right person, saw the wisdom in the suggestion and applied, determined to be present each day of the course and just see where it would lead me.

Despite many years of teaching and developing my own art practice, I wanted the fresh feeling of starting again with no preconceptions or specific attachment to outcome.  I wanted fun, to explore printing, sculpture, drawing and disciplined hours of working as a group.  And then there was the sheer delightful novelty of being a fully matriculated student at an institution I had long admired from afar, just 42 years after taking my previous degree in English at the University of Wales.

Truly it was a springboard into a new world of possibility, and I can’t wait to start my Masters in September.

And what is my note to Self?

Pay attention to the gift of creative vision Iona!  Accept it, it has never left you alone.  I’m so glad you’re doing this.
