There’s a wonderfully energetic art department at this Stirling school and for a couple of months now, the Advanced Sixth year students have been paying for a day of my time. I set up a still life arrangement and then work through a mixed media painting of it from the very first sketches to the last piece of oil paint, pastel, charcoal and ink mark. They get to witness first hand a painting emerge from scratch with all the drips, scratches, crises and triumphs. And even if they do not choose to work on the still life arrangement themselves, the principles of internal struggles, composition, media, doubts and triumphs are common to all of us.
It’s such fun and so stimulating that although I’m paid for one day I usually end up staying for three!
